The Flight Free Australia crew got together in September 2019. We are a small group of ordinary, concerned Australians from four states — Queensland, Tasmania, New South Wales and Victoria — who came together through a website which showed how aviation emissions were impacting global heating.
Since we recognised the climate emergency and wanted to reduce greenhouse emissions we decided to encourage people to act by forming Flight Free Australia. We meet weekly via Zoom, and we have done all our organising face to face, showing by example that it is not necessary to travel anywhere to have meetings.
Annabel, Helen, Mark, Anna and Alex snapped at a weekly meeting.
We live in a world where flying is associated with open-mindedness and freedom, frequent flying is rewarded, and the aviation industry does everything in their power to keep it that way. We therefore recognise that the task of changing this mentality is monumental and this reality informs all that we do.
Raise awareness about the dangers of greenhouse gas emissions from aviation during the climate emergency.
Address aviation injustice by building public support at the grass roots (given that the more people who become aware of the dangers of aviation emissions, the more power we will have to affect change).
We do this through engagement in news media, social media, public meetings, specific campaigns and, importantly, through day-to-day conversations with friends, relatives, colleagues and strangers.

Support international and national policies to rapidly transition away from air travel, making aviation emissions zero by 2030 or sooner.
We know this can be done, by eliminating tax exemptions on aviation fuel, taxing profits of commercial airlines, investing in ground transport infrastructure, placing moratoria on new airport infrastructure including new runways, introducing frequent flyer levies, setting limits on flights, changing institutional travel policies, and more.
